A Splash of Winter Color

The past two weeks in North Texas have been unusually cold and wintry with plenty of snow and ice for us. Over the first eight school days of February, our students only went to school for 3 of them -- unheard of here in Texas! The cold weather also put the natural world to sleep here as we had the coldest temperatures this area has seem in 20 years with night time temperatures down to 9 degrees F with windchills below zero! I was very lucky to have the pleasure of several cardinals visit our yard to grab a nutritious snack in the midst of the brutal cold.

Absolutely gorgeous!!! The Cardinal was my grandmother's favorite bird. They will always have a special place in my heart, for when I see one, I feel that she is with me.

Very nice shots, I especially love the second one in the trees. We've had the coldest weather here in the last 20 years too, they closed school a couple of days just because of the cold - one morning the actual temperature at my house was -19.6 F with strong winds making it feel much colder!

Beautiful photos! Having moved west 15 years ago I really miss the cardinals; I always loved their red flash of color against the snow. Thank you for these pictures!

Incredibly beautiful. Wow. I have a feeder, but always forget to fill it. I really should so I can attract these red wonders. Lovely photos.

What great photos! I haven't seen a cardinal in a while now ... just ratty looking squirrels hanging out in my backyard making all kinds of squirrel noises. I am waiting for the birds to return .... especially the cardinals and blue jays.

So pretty! I love Cardinals -- my grandmother always said her favorite bird was the Cardinal and we used to take food out for them throughout the winter.

My Camera Critter meme this week is about birds also :-)

How lovely, they are so beautiful birds. We don't have them so I see them only on such beautiful photos.

Stunning images! Cardinals are such beautiful birds. The male is so very radiant and the female, quite lovely. Today we heard a few cardinal songs which is always a welcome sound. Stay warm!

Ya'll have been having some crazy weather!! I'm sure the birds are just as tired of it as we are. I have a soft spot for the female cardinals. :)

Lucky of you to have a visitor on a very cold season, it's beautiful photo of the cardigan. He don't look so cold there.

Thanks for visiting my site...

Just looking at those Cardinals made me feel cold John, but you got a great shot of one in that sunny spot. Hope it warms up for you soon, it is warming up a little here in the UK now.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Come again soon. I enjoyed your cardinals. Back in another life I taught 8th and 9th grade science. That was in 1964.

Great shots of the Cardinals. During the drab winter I always enjoy seeing several male Cardinals together, something that won't be seen in another month or so.

Wonderful color and detail in both captures!

Hope your weather has been warming up! The past few days down here in New Braunfels have been glorious. Nice shots of the cardinals. The mockingbirds have started belting out their repetoire from the treetops! I love it. Mockingbirds don't wander as far north as I do!!

really, they need to start singing early in the morning so I can stop blaming their silence for being late to work
